As of the 1st December 2011 Carnival Cruise Lines will be increasing their gratuities from $10 to $11.50 per person, per day, which is an increase of around 15%. If you have already booked your cruise and have prepaid your gratuities then you will not be affected by this increase. It’s said that the way these tips will be distributed between the crew member’s will also change meaning the headwaiter/waiter will be getting $5.50, your cabin steward will be getting $3.70 and $2 per day for alternative services including guest services and entertainment.
We have been on a number of cruises and we have always pre paid our gratuities before sailing. But on our last cruise back in August we decided that the best thing to do on future cruises is not to pre pay them, and the reason for this is because you might want to only tip your room attendant, or even a favorite member of staff who you think made your holiday special but you can only do this if you don’t pre pay.
There are two ways that you can pay your gratuities with Carnival Cruise lines. The first one is called the Reverse Gratuity Policy, which means that the recommended gratuities are automatically add to your account and you will have the discretion to adjust these gratuities during your cruise. This includes the option to adjust gratuities for any individual crew-member you think deserves them within the dinning room or housekeeping departments. The second is Pre-Paid Gratuities that have been pre-arranged and paid at the time of booking your cruise. These gratuities cannot be removed once the booking has been ticketed and guests will not have the option to adjust the gratuities.
