As some of you might be aware, it is hurricane season in some parts of the county, and it seems that a hurricane in the pacific called Jova has made its presents felt amongst the cruise industry with many cruise ships having to change their itineraries.
Reports say that Jova, has strengthened to a category three storm and is currently heading towards the western coast of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center has said “the storm is likely to strengthen” over the next few days.
So how does this affect the current cruise itineraries? So far Carnival Splendor and Paradise have not changed their itineraries but the Carnival Spirit will be sailing a revised itinerary for its current nine-night Mexican Riviera sailing from LA skipping ports Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta.
Another cruise company that has also made changes to their itinerary is Holland and America. Oosterdam is currently in the middle of an 11-night Mexican Riviera sailing from Vancouver to San Diego.
All cruise ship these days are fitted with the state-of-the-art satellites that are designed to help the bridge officer monitor the weather during a hurricane season. When a cruise itinerary has to change it can become a task in itself to find an alternate port to dock at due to other ships already at the other ports, but give the cruise company’s their due they always make sure that you have a fantastic cruise no matter what the situation might be.
Have you sailed in the Hurricane Season, and was your itinerary affected?
UPDATE: According to the National Hurricane Center Hurricane Jova is now a tropical storm and is located around 30 miles northeast of Puerto Vallarta. Revised cruise itineraries are still being used at this time.
